Lab Updates From Strategic Communications

Why the “31” in the Elements Logo?

February 28, 2019

A number of employees have inquired about the number 31 that appears in the upper left corner of the Elements logo. The logo, conceived of by Strategic Communications and designed by Creative Services, is an homage to entries on the Periodic Table, which includes 16 elements the Lab either discovered or had a hand in discovering. “El” is shorthand for “Elements” and “31” is a reference to the year the Lab was founded…1931. Have other questions about Elements? Send them to communications@lbl.gov. To sign up for Elements, visit elements.lbl.gov.
