Dear colleagues,
Berkeley Lab has a long tradition of multidisciplinary teams working together to bring science solutions to the world. Fostering a diverse workforce—diverse in experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds—and a culture of inclusion are key to attracting and engaging the brightest minds and furthering our record of scientific excellence and groundbreaking innovations.
Today we start sharing with you ways we all can help build a culture of inclusion and diversity at the Lab through IDEA, an acronym that stands for inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability. We are at our best when we live these ideals.
IDEA allows us to:
– Advance innovation and discoveries
– Build high-performing teams
– Harness the power of our collective contributions
– Unlock teams’ fullest potential
– Achieve operational excellence
IDEA is not separate from our work; it is integral to how we do our work. This is not a short-term project, but a permanent shift in our culture. It may take years for us to make this second nature. We start by developing a shared language around IDEA’s key concepts.
In the next few weeks, there will be articles in Elements, videos, team discussions lead by your supervisor, and interactive exercises that will allow us as a group and individually to explore each of the attributes that make up IDEA. Please join me in taking part in this Lab-wide experience. Start at our diversity webpage.
Best regards,
Mike
