Dear Colleagues,
Please join me in extending my heartfelt best wishes and gratitude to Environmental Health and Safety Division Director Jack Salazar, who has announced his plans to retire in the coming months, pending the search and selection of a replacement. Jack’s legacy at Berkeley Lab spans 26 years of implementation and management of EH&S technical programs in national laboratories and academic institutions.
A graduate of UC Berkeley, Jack came to Berkeley Lab in 1993, and served as an EH&S Manager for over 17 years. During this time, he provided a wealth of EH&S support and leadership for the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and was the subject matter expert of the EH&S Industrial Hygiene Group. In 2010, he was promoted to EH&S Deputy Division Director and served in that post for 8 years. He was then the Interim Division Director and in 2018 became EH&S Division Director. There are few at the Laboratory who can match Jack’s dedication, institutional knowledge, and strong leadership.
For the past year and a half, as EH&S Division Director, Jack’s sound judgement and deep knowledge have been invaluable to me in the evaluation and development of the incoming leadership team and in supporting the research and operations mission of the Laboratory.
Personally, I would like to thank Jack for being an extraordinary leader during his tenure at Berkeley Lab. Jack has put EH&S at the forefront across the DOE complex, and he has modeled career commitment and trusted leadership for us all. Congratulations, Jack!
Sincerely,
Michael
