Dear Colleagues,
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Union has notified the University of California of its intent to conduct a UC-system-wide one-day strike on Wednesday, November 13 from midnight to 11:59 p.m. Approximately 68 Berkeley Lab employees are members of the AFSCME SX bargaining unit (custodians, drivers, groundskeepers) and two Lab employees are in the EX (patient care services) bargaining unit.
On Wednesday staff should enter and exit at either the Blackberry or Grizzly Gate and be prepared to show both your parking placard and your Lab ID as you enter. Strawberry Gate is reserved for the exclusive use of construction contractors, their subcontractors, and their suppliers and will be closed to staff.
The Orange and Rockridge shuttle routes will have slight modifications but the Blue route will operate as normal. There may be traffic congestion in Berkeley that will delay drivers and the shuttles.
FedEx plans to deliver and pickup, but UPS will not be delivering or picking up on Wednesday. If you have a critical package that needs to be shipped or is scheduled to arrive that day, you will need to contact the carrier to make alternative arrangements.
You can read details about these and other changes for Wednesday. Fliers will also be passed out at the gates on Monday and Tuesday with additional information. Stay informed on changes through updates in Elements, at status.lbl.gov, on 1-800-445-5830, or our new Twitter handle @LBNLstatus. Strike-related questions should be sent to strikeinfo@lbl.gov.
Please keep in mind that at the end of the day, we are all one team. Practice patience while our colleagues exercise their legal right of free expression.
Best regards,
Ellen Ford
Deputy Chief Operating Officer
