I am pleased to announce that Jonathan Carter has been named Associate Lab Director for Computing Sciences (CS), effective Jan. 27, replacing Kathy Yelick, who stepped down in December.
In his role as Area Deputy for Science in CS for the past few years, I have come to appreciate his experience in research, engineering, and operations, along with his skill in working across the Lab to build relationships.
His national leadership in Exascale and Quantum, two areas of critical strategic interest to the Lab, along with his instrumental efforts in establishing the Lab’s national reputation as a leader in High Performance Computing, makes him the ideal leader for Computing Sciences.
Jonathan has been at the Lab for 23 years, beginning as National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) User Services Group Leader, so I know he will continue his work to build relationships with our user community as well.
Jonathan holds a Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, which followed by postdoctoral work at the University of British Columbia in Canada, and IBM Almaden. You can read more about Jonathan in our news release.
Please join me in congratulating Jonathan on his new position at the Lab.
