COVID-19: Procedural Action Steps in Event of Potential Exposure at Lab Site

March 5, 2020

Procedures in the event of potential exposure at the Lab or a Lab offsite facility.

Last updated: March 5, 2020

Situation #1:

When an employee, affiliate, user, or guest at a Lab facility reports they have flu-like symptoms or appears to have flu-like symptoms:

  • The employee receiving the information should notify their supervisor.
  • A supervisor should talk with the individual and ask them to take appropriate action to follow prudent health practices which include taking sick leave and/or teleworking, and seeking advice from their personal health care provider as necessary.

Situation #2:

When there is a report that an individual who has traveled from or through a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Level 3 country, has accessed a Lab site, and has not self-isolated for 14 days, the supervisor or host should take the following action:

  • Send the person home to wait out the 14-day isolation period. Advise the individual that if they become symptomatic to contact their personal health-care provider. Their Lab host or supervisor should also be notified.
  • The host or supervisor should email CIMG@LBL.GOV with a description of the occurrence and names of employees who may have had contact with the individual. Providing these names allows the Lab’s Health Services to have a contact list in case the individual becomes symptomatic.
  • The host or supervisor should be in regular contact with the individual to see if they become symptomatic during the 14-day isolation period.
  • If the individual reports symptoms, contact the Critical Incident Management Group via the Site Operations Center at 510-486-6999.  The CIMG will work with Health Services on prudent next actions.

Situation #3:

If there is a report that an individual who has traveled from or through a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Level 3 country, has accessed a Lab site, and is showing symptoms of COVID-19, the supervisor or host should take the following action:

  • Send the individual home and advise them to immediately contact their personal health-care provider.
  • Contact the Critical Incident Management Group via the Site Operations Center at 510-486-6999.  The CIMG will work with Health Services on prudent next actions.
