Darryl Nelson has been with the Lab’s Shuttle Services for more than 10 years. Formerly with MV Transportation, Darryl continues to operate Lab shuttles with the new service called A Paratransit.
Darryl works on projects at home in his spare time, and in that realm, he is a self-described “jack of all trades and the master of none.” He grew up on a farm in Washington state, and rode in rodeos in his youth, and enjoys the abundant wildlife at the Lab..
Q: What’s the best thing about the changes to shuttle operations the Lab has made this year?
A: The transition from MV Transportation to A Paratransit has been exciting. I see a lot of advantages to the new system. We’ve got new shuttle vehicles which are great; we’re using new software for riders to order shuttle pickups and we’ve got a great management team.
Q: You’ve been with the Lab for over 10 years, what do you like about your job?
A: Yes, it’s been over 10 years and working at Berkeley Lab has been great. I like the diverse culture and I have great people to work with. Not to mention all of our wildlife, I really like that.
Q: Is shuttle driver turnover at the Lab low or high?
A: I believe driver turnover is low compared to other types of transit. I mean, we have several shuttle drivers here that have worked at the Lab since shuttle service started over 10 years ago! That tells me they like working at the Lab as much as I do.
