Visible Spectrum: Giselle Jiles, ESnet Division Administrator

October 14, 2020

Visible Spectrum is a series to spotlight talented and dedicated women employees across the Lab. Giselle Jiles first arrived at the Lab in 2012 and since then has worked in four Divisions: Advanced Light Source (ALS), Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics (ATAP), Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Department (ESDRD), and Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). Giselle is currently an administrator supporting division directors for important meetings and events. Her colleague notes: “She does not only handle the complicated logistics of the business, but also offers creative solutions to difficult problems while making sure everything is in compliance – and all with a smile.”

In her free time, Giselle enjoys playing volleyball and softball, hiking, cycling, gardening, and cooking.

What inspired you to work at Berkeley Lab?

Before the Lab, I worked in the private sector at Krieger-Campbell, Inc., which was a financial planning firm. In 2012, I decided to pivot my career and applied for the ALS User Office Specialist position. I was always fascinated by science and thought working at the Lab might be a good fit and an exciting direction to explore.

What is the most exciting part of your work?

Since I arrived at the Lab, I have worked in four Divisions: ALS, ATAP, ESDRD, and now ESnet. In my current role as the Division Administrator for Scientific Networking Division/ESnet, I develop, manage, and coordinate a broad range of specialized operational, business services and administrative support for the Division and Division leadership.

I enjoy supporting scientists and my coworkers by organizing workshops, seminars, conferences, and meetings. Through organizing these events, I meet everyone I e-mail, talk on the phone with, and meet via Zoom in person. I definitely miss that interaction at in-person events!

What have you been most proud of in your work?

I am proud of every project and every role I have worked in since my first day at the Lab. Working with scientists who are making a difference in the world, no project truly trumps another project. Starting new projects unveils new opportunities and helps promote continuous learning. The Lab is a great place to work as this environment helps me open my mind by building on what I already know.

Do you have tips you’d recommend for someone looking to enter and/or succeed in your field of work?

I have three key pieces of advice:

  • Use every job and task as an opportunity to learn something new
  • Keep an open mind
  • Build good healthy relationships
